Ulrabiart

Ulf Ragnar Berlin (also ich, denn wer sonst würde wohl diese Zeilen schreiben?) wurde als jüngstes von vier Kindern und einziger Sohn eines Sozialarbeiterpaares in Duisburg geboren. Ein knappes Jahr später zog die Familie in den Westerwald, wo er seine Kindheit und Jugend bis ins achtzehnte Lebensjahr hinein verbrachte. 1999 begann er eine Lehre zum Sozialassistenten in Limburg an der Lahn, die er jedoch nach einem Jahr, zugunsten einer Ausbildung zum Glas- und Porzellanmaler an der Glasfachschule in Hadamar, abbrach. 2003 zog er nach dem Erreichen des Gesellentitels nach Mainz, wo er an der Berufsbildenden Schule 1 die Fachhochschulreife im Bereich Gestaltung erlangte.
Seit 2006 lebt Ulf R. Berlin in Darmstadt wo er Kommunikations-Design am Fachbereich Gestaltung der Hochschule Darmstadt studierte. 2013 schloss er das
Studium als Diplom Designer (FH) ab.

Ist es eigentlich normal oder bedenklich, wenn man von sich selbst
in der dritten Person spricht? Egal, lassen wir den Quatsch!

Also, ich habe sobald ich dazu in der Lage war einen Stift zu halten immer gerne gemalt und gezeichnet, was meinen Eltern wohl nur recht gewesen sein kann, da man nicht viel mehr als ein Blatt Papier und ein paar Stifte brauchte, um mich zu beschäftigen. Als ich acht Jahre alt war überkam mich eine Faszination für alles düstere und makabere und alles was irgendwie mit dem Tod zu tun hatte. Entsprechend inflationär wurden diese Themen in meinen Bildern aufgegriffen.
Als Schüler habe ich ständig die Ränder meiner Hefte und später ganze Collegeblockseiten mit Totenschädeln, Skeletten, Grabsteinen und ähnlich erbaulichen Dingen vollgekritzelt, mich dabei aber stets auf Blei-, Filz- und Buntstifte beschränkt, da mir der Kunstunterricht den Gebrauch von flüssigen Farben gründlich vergällt hatte. Das hat sich erst durch meine Lehre zum Glas- und Porzellanmaler geändert, wo ich beim Entwurfszeichnen die Vorzüge der Acrylmalerei durchaus zu schätzen lernte und gegen Ende der Lehre auch für private Zwecke nutzte. Ein Jahr nach der Lehre habe ich angefangen neben Papier auch auf Leinwand (genau genommen auf Baumwollwand) zu malen und mir so
die Ölmalerei selbst beigebracht, da keine Kunstakademie dazu bereit war mich aufzunehmen. (Schnüüf! Ja, wer will darf sich jetzt Taschentücher ins Gesicht drücken;-)
Entsprechend eigenwillig ist meine Malerei. Ich verwende zum Beispiel Leinöl statt Terpentinöl oder sowas, weil es nicht so mieft und zu dem Zeitpunkt als ich anfing günstig (d. h. umsonst) und in größeren Mengen (der Liter hat für mehrere Jahre gereicht!) zur Verfügung stand.
Seit Oktober 2006 wohne ich in Darmstadt, wo ich bis 2013 am Fachbereich Gestaltung der dortigen Hochschule Kommunikations-Design studiert habe (Ja, ich weiß, dass das ein ziemlich langes Studium war. Na, und?) In Berlin bin ich noch nie gewesen, ich heiße nur so mit Nachnamen (das aber gar nicht mal so ungerne). Ragnar ist übrigens mein zweiter Vorname und nicht, wie manche schlussfolgern, mein Nachname. In meiner Freizeit bin ich als halbautodidaktischer Kunstmaler tätig und versuche mich seit 2011 (wieder) am Schreiben von Kurzgeschichten. Fast alle meine Werke, ob Malerei, Zeichnung oder Geschreibsel, haben nach wie vor gemeinsam, dass ich mich dabei überwiegend mit makabren Themen auseinandersetze, weshalb ich mich selbst gerne als Makabermaler bzw. Leichenliterat bezeichne.
Im Jahr 2010 war ich erstmals mit zweien meiner Gemälde bei einer Sammelausstellung, die anlässlich der zweiten Darmstädter Nachwuchstagung für Philosophen stattfand, vertreten. Eines davon wurde als Covermotiv für die ausstellungsbegleitende Veröffentlichung "Meta Texte2" des Darmverlags verwendet. 2011 diente ein weiteres Bild von mir als Front- und Backcover für das Heft "Leben im Nebel 6" aus dem WhiteTrain-Verlag, dem Nachfolgeprojekt des mittlerweile eingestellten Darmverlags. Seit Herbst 2011 bin ich als Autor, Illustrator, und zuweilen auch als Co-Layouter aktiv am WhiteTrain-Verlag beteiligt und habe bereits an mehreren öffentlichen Lesungen des WhiteTrain als Leser teilgenommen. Derzeitig arbeite ich an mehreren Projekten, sowohl literarischer als auch malerischer Natur, darunter ein Bildband (zumindest als PDF), über deren Fertigstellung ich keine Voraussagen mehr machen möchte, weil ich mich dabei bisher immer nur tierisch verschätzt habe. Was soll's, ich bin nunmal kein Prophet.

Hello and welcome to the page of Ulrabiart on Deviantart, the first place on the web where the art of Ulrabi is shown to a worldwide public. Ulrabi is of cause not my real name, it's a kind of an akronym of my real name, which is (believe it or not): Ulf Ragnar Berlin.

So why am I using a pseudonym if I'm revealing my real name anyway?
Because my real name has been mistaken for a pseudonym for so many times, that I thought I could just as well take on a real pseudonym, so my actual name would more likely be believed to be my real name rather than my pseudonym. Confused? Great, let's start with the bio:

I was born in 1982 as the youngest of four siblings and the only son to a couple of social workers in the Ruhr region, the largest urban agglomeration on German ground. In 1983 my family moved to the Westerwald region on the countryside, where I grew up in a hicksville surrounded by comparatively small mountains, meadows and lots of woods.

From the very beginning I liked to draw and was encouraged to do so by my parents. At the age of eight I got a death quirk and "pledged my allegiance" to all things macabre, ghoulish and morbid with a high preference for skulls and skeletons, which I doodled on the edges of my exercise books. At the age of twelve I began reading translations of the work of E.A. Poe and discovered the joys of Dark Romanticism in general and Gothic Fiction in particular.

After school I got an apprenticeship as a painter on glass and porcelain and
eventually received the title of a journeyman in 2003, though I decided never
to work as such since I had proven to do a terrible job at my craft.
Instead I went to a technical college in Mainz where I received a vocational
diploma in the subject of design.

Afterwards I went back to my fathers house and spent the following two years applying at any noteworthy academy of arts within the German border and for other studies as well. After having received rejection after rejection I finally moved to Darmstadt and began studying visual communication at the Hochschule Darmstadt – University of Applied Science and graduated as a degreed designer in 2013.

Apart from painting I'm also working as an illustrator, writer, assisting layout man
and member of redaction for the tiny, officially not yet established publishing house WhiteTrain.
Sounds good, doesn't it? Well I think it would sound even better if I or anyone who works for the WhiteTrain would get paid for it. Alas! It's a non profit-low budget project. We're publishing readers and booklets in very small editions of 15 to 30 copies each. They contain the fictions and imaginations of local artists
and strorietellers. The WhiteTrain wouldn't be possible if the contributers would get paid according to the worth of their work.
Anyway, most of my illustrations and stories appeared in the "Leben im Nebel" (life/living in the fog) series, our reader for weird fiction, science fiction and horror, which has been closed down when we published our tenth issue in spring 2013.
We are now working on a new project called IF – Magazine for applied phantasy.

Occasionally I'm also taking part on public readings in Darmstadt and the surrounding area.

Most of my paintings are done with oil paint on stretched canvas, or more accurately: stretched cotton.
Though I'm using linseed oil instead of turpentine oil, because it's cheaper and doesn't make you go dizzy. Occasionally I'm also painting with acrylic on paper.
In spite of beeing a journeyman painter on glass and porcelain, I have never been taught to paint with oil paint or even read a book about it. My skills in this discipline are self-taught. My drawings are usually made with pencil, felt pen and ink, but I'm also making digital drawings sometimes.

As for my favoured subject in art: to me the word macabre doesn't only mean "work of art that deals with death and decay", it also contains a great deal of dark humour. Most of my works are meant to be ironic and/or sarcastic.
They also contain a hint of cynicism, which is, according to me, not necessarily a bad thing, rather than a mirror for the hypocrites, who pretend to be good but secretly approve of bad things, while the cynic is talking about the bad things as if they were officially approved, thus annoying those who commit evil deeds, though they know it's wrong. Because of my self-proclaimed affiliation to the macabre and dark humour I took the titles of "Makabermaler" (Ger.: macabre-painter or painter of the macabre) and "Leichenliterat" (Ger.: corpse-writer) and characterise my art as a whole with the word "Nekrokomik" (Ger.: Necro-comedy).

A main source of inspiration for my art are medieval depictions of the Dance Macabre, where a row of skeletons or nearly skeletal bodies is mocking the living while dragging them away. But I'm also getting a lot of inspiration for pictures from strories I have read. My inspiration for my own stories is often taken from classical horror stories and european folklore, sometimes they're also inspired by pictures and photographs. In one case one of my stories was inspired by one of my own paintings, which seems to be like a kind of mental incest.
