Description

Öl auf Leinwand, ca. 30x40 cm, 25.08.2015
Oil on stretched canvas, ca. 30x40 cm, August 25th 2015

Again a picture that took more time to make than scheduled. I only intended to paint the woman and the skeleton in the middle but misjudged the size on the canvas, and so I had to come up with something to fill the background without making it look boring. Unfortunately I was run over by the heat of the summer and found myself unable to paint anything at all for several weeks! The encounter of the "three linving with the three dead" is a late medieval/early modern age allegory of perishability and was used by many artists. I this allegory a group of three young jolly people is riding through the woods when they suddenly encounter a group of three dead who tell them, that: What you are, we used to be, what we are, you soon will be! I didn't intend to pick up the subject, but in the end I felt reminded of it by my own picture.
